CRN Registration
Designs for boilers, pressure vessels, tube and shell heat exchangers, plate heat exchangers, valves, flow meters, pipe fittings, B16.5 flanges, pressure coils, piping skids and piping systems to be installed in Canada shall be submitted to the regulatory authority to obtain CRN (Canadian Registration Number). We do review, code calculations of designs. We also help do submissions of design package to each jurisdiction to get CRN.
Canadian Registration Number or CRN Number:
A Canadian Registration Number (CRN) is defined by CSA B51 4.3 as a number issued by the regulatory authority to designs when they are accepted and registered. It typically consists of a letter, four digits, and a decimal point followed by up to ten digits and/or two letters. The first letter and four digits are part of a sequential numbering system used by the issuing province or territory. The first digit/letter to the right of the decimal point indicates the first province/territory it is registered in, which is detailed below:
- 1 - British Columbia
- 2 - Alberta
- 3 - Saskatchewan
- 4 - Manitoba
- 5 - Ontario
- 6 - Quebec
- 7 - New Brunswick
- 8 - Nova Scotia
- 9 - Prince Edward Island
- 0 - Newfoundland
- T - Northwest Territories
- Y - Yukon Territory
- N - Nunavut
For example, M1234.56 means design was first registered in Ontario and then accepted by Quebec.
Boiler & pressure vessels:
Per TSSA guidelines, all pressure vessels and boilers must be registered prior to fabrication except the following:
- A low pressure boiler that has either a wetted heating surface of 30 square feet or less, or a power rating of 30 KW or less.
- A boiler in a hot liquid heating system that has no obstructions (valves) to free circulation between the boiler and an expansion tank which is vented to atmosphere.
- A pressure vessel that contains a gas, vapour or liquid at maximum working pressure of 15 psi or less.
- A pressure vessel that contains liquids not more hazardous than water at a temperature of 150°F or less and at a maximum working pressure of 250 psi or less.
- A pressure vessel for domestic use that has an internal diameter of 24 inches or less for the storage of hot water at temperature no greater than 212°F and the heat input is 120KW or less.
- A pressure vessel that is used exclusively for hydraulic purposes at a temperature no greater than 150°F.
- A pressure vessel that has an internal diameter of 24 inches or less in a liquid pumping system at a temperature no greater than 150°F and that contains air or an inert gas compressed to serve as a cushion.
- Pumps, compressors, turbines, generators, engines, and hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders where the primary design considerations or stresses, or both, are derived from the functional requirements of the device.
- A pressure vessel having a capacity of 1.5 cubic feet or less shall be registered as a category 'H' fitting.
- A pressure vessel having an internal diameter of 6 inches or less shall be registered as a category 'H' fitting.

Fittings:
Fittings refer to pipe fittings, flanges, valves, expansion joints and flexible hoses, filters and gauges etc. Fittings are classified as follows in CSA-B51:
| Category | Type of fitting |
|---|---|
| A | Pipe fittings, including couplings, tees, elbows, wyes, plugs, unions, nipples, caps, reducers |
| B | Flanges |
| C | Line valves |
| D | Expansion joints, flexible connections, hose assemblies |
| E | Strainers, filters, separators, steam traps |
| F | Pressure gauges, level gauges, sight glasses, levels, Pressure transmitters |
| G | Pressure relief valves |
| H | Pressure-retaining components that do not fall into any of the above categories |
Important notes:
- Some fittings do not need to be CRN registered in Saskatchewan. See: https://www.tsask.ca/boilers-pressure-vessels/design-registration/fitting-design/
- Some fittings do not need to be CRN registered in British Columbia. See: Directive D‑BP 2013‑03 (TSBC Fitting Exemptions)
